Linyi is a city in China’s Shandong province. Its international airport was originally built in 1958, and later expanded in 1991 and again in 2016. The current passenger terminal 2 was built in 2017. In recent years, with LYI’s passenger throughput exploding, it has been operating under capacity for several years. A new terminal is urgently needed for the growing demand.
LYI airport authority invited SAAN to provide a concept design for Terminal 3. After several rounds of design comparison, we finalized the current design scheme.
The new terminal will be placed on the west side of terminal 2 and be connected with an airside connector. It will increase the annual passenger throughput from 2.5 million to about 15 million. This will meet the airport demand for the next 15 years based on our estimate.
The new terminal will have a completely modern design and architectural styling, taking inspiration from Linyi’s natural scenery of its mountains and rivers. Its major interior spaces are designed with maximum attention to passenger experience, emphasizing convenience, security, comfort, and sustainability. Our design also included a master plan of the immediate airport surrounding region, preparing for airport city-type development, promoting an aviation-focused economy, and ultimately promoting a more robust local economy.
