This is a new construction proposed on the existing site of the current embassy buildings in Beijing’s old embassy district. The site is about 55 meters by 100 meters rectangular. It orients towards the north, facing a quiet street. The existing buildings are to be demolished to make room for the new ones. Our design is inspired by traditional Ethiopian architecture, which dates back to the 8th century BC.

All buildings are skinned with earth-tone granite stones that remind people of the ancient castles in Ethiopia. Facade elements of archways, strong heavy columns, and volumetric window openings establish a solid sense of history and pride. Detailed treatment is skillfully handled to express tradition and cultural identity.

Additional security is achieved by offsetting the main entrance behind a protected courtyard while ensuring visual connectivity by using ornamental fencing and planting a low wall at the front of the courtyard.
