Project Data

This project is located in central Afghanistan, with an altitude of 2250 meters. It is a community and a cultural center with meeting spaces, exhibits, music rooms, a performance hall, and a library. Our design uses courtyards to express traditional architectural heritage and accommodate functional needs. The interplay of outdoor and indoor, the open and enclosed, brings regional culture, landscape, and history into this cultural center. Solar panels and wheat fields in the south plaza will add a technological dimension to this facility.

The design explores a vocabulary of masonry and combines it with concrete, wood, and large glazing. The sweeping free curved arch that rises with slope and centrality of the immense opening at the main facade embodies a sense of mystique, rising off, and timelessness.
